Drug 'Molly' is taking a party toll in the United States

Drug 'Molly' is taking a party toll in the United States

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Artist and therapy student Anna and her friends marked a birthday in New York recently with a familiar ritual: They pumped up the electronic music, danced, and celebrated with a special guest called Molly.
"It was a group of about 12 people at someone's house and we were all just celebrating," Anna recalled. "Somebody had it and, and you know, it was a pretty electronic music kind of crowd."
Molly, an illegal stimulant frequently sold in pill form, has become prominent in the electronic music scene over the past decade, said Anna, 26, who did not want to give her full name because she is in school and "counseling people to be healthy."
Molly is the street name for a drug that is pushed as the pure powder form of a banned substance known as MDMA, the main chemical in ecstasy. In the last five years, Molly has made its way into popular culture, helped by references to it made by entertainers such as Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Kanye West.
The drug's dangers became more clear after a rash of overdoses and four deaths this summer, including two at a huge annual electronic music festival in New York City.
The parties of the late 1980s and early '90s saw the heyday of ecstasy, but its popularity began to wane a decade ago after a number of deaths and hospitalizations.
That's when Molly made her way onto the scene.
Over the last few years, drugs sold under that name have "flooded" the market, said Rusty Payne, a spokesman with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
In some states, there has been a 100-fold increase - the combined number of arrests, seizures, emergency room mentions and overdoses - between 2009 and 2012, according to DEA figures.
The drug is accessible and marketed to recreational drug users who believe it to be less dangerous than its predecessor, which was often cut with other substances, from Ritalin to LSD.
Like ecstasy, Molly is said to give a lengthy, euphoric high with slight hallucinogenic properties.
In reality, however, the promised pure MDMA experience "doesn't exist," said Payne.
'SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT'
Most of the Molly is one of several synthetic designer drugs that have been flooding the U.S. and European marketplace from chemical labs primarily based in China, Payne said.
"A lot of people are missing the boat here," he said. Molly could be anything ... 80 to 90 percent of the time we are given a chemical or substance believed to be Molly, we're finding most of the time it is something completely different."
Four recent deaths attributed to Molly have thrust the club drug into the national spotlight. On August 31, a 23-year-old Syracuse University graduate and a 20-year-old University of New Hampshire student died after taking what they believed to be Molly during an electronic music concert in New York City. The deaths, and several other reported overdoses, prompted the Electric Zoo festival to cancel the final day of the concert.
A University of Virginia student died at a rave in Washington, D.C., the same weekend, after taking what her friends said was Molly. Days earlier in Boston, a 19-year-old woman died in a club and three concert-goers overdosed at the waterfront, police said.
In Atlanta, this weekend's TomorrowWorld music festival organizers warned on its website of zero-tolerance for MDMA use, but noted: "If you or someone around you has taken something that you are concerned about or need help, it is important that you tell our staff. We are here to help and never judge."
The number of visits to U.S. emergency rooms involving MDMA has jumped 123 percent since 2004, according to data compiled by the Drug Abuse Warning Network. In 2011, the most recent year on record, there were 22,498 such visits.
In the New York concert deaths, the medical examiner found lethal mixtures of MDMA and methylone, a synthetic stimulant, the DEA said.
"It's exactly the same phenomenon that occurred with ecstasy a decade ago," said Dr. Charles Grob, a professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine and an expert on MDMA. "Ecstasy had terrible reliability and it's the same with Molly. Though it's being marketed as pure MDMA, it's a hoax."
Overdose symptoms can include rapid heart beat, overheating, excessive sweating, shivering and involuntary twitching.
Grob said references in pop culture can fan misconceptions.
Miley Cyrus admitted in July that a lyric in her new dance anthem "We Can't Stop" was a reference to Molly. Last year at a Miami concert, Madonna, the mother of a teenager, asked: "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?" She later said she was referring to a friend.
The illusion that MDMA is somehow less harmful has been branded with Molly, according to Anna.
"I have definitely heard that people think that it's pure. I have some friends that are like 'I only want to do Molly. I won't do other stuff' because it's marketed as something that's somehow better," said Anna. "But actually no one knows what's in it. All of it is a gamble."

No. 2 US nuke commander suspended amid probe

No. 2 US nuke commander suspended amid probe

WASHINGTON (AP) — The No. 2 officer at the military command in charge of all U.S. nuclear war-fighting forces has been suspended and is under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigation Command for issues related to gambling, officials said Saturday.
The highly unusual action against a high-ranking officer at U.S. Strategic Command was made more than three weeks ago but not publicly announced.
Air Force Gen. Robert Kehler, who heads Strategic Command, suspended the deputy commander, Navy Vice Adm. Tim Giardina, from his duties on Sept. 3, according to the command's top spokeswoman, Navy Capt. Pamela Kunze. Giardina is still assigned to the command but is prohibited from performing duties related to nuclear weapons and other issues requiring a security clearance, she said.
Kehler has recommended to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel that Giardina be reassigned, Kunze said. Giardina has been the deputy commander of Strategic Command since December 2011. He is a career submarine officer and prior to starting his assignment there was the deputy commander and chief of staff at U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Two senior U.S. officials familiar with the investigation said it is related to gambling issues. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe in incomplete.
Strategic Command oversees the military's nuclear fighter units, including the Navy's nuclear-armed submarines and the Air Force's nuclear bombers and nuclear land-based missiles. It is located near Omaha, Neb.
Kunze said Strategic Command did not announce the Sept. 3 suspension because Giardina remains under investigation and action on Kehler's recommendation that Giardina be reassigned is pending. The suspension was first reported by the Omaha World-Herald.
The spokeswoman said a law enforcement agency, which she would not identify, began an investigation of Giardina on June 16. Kehler became aware of this on July 16, and the following day he asked the Naval Criminal Investigation Service to begin a probe.
The suspension is yet another blow to the military's nuclear establishment. Last spring the nuclear missile unit at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., pulled 17 launch control officers off duty after a problematic inspection and later relieved of duty the officer in charge of training and proficiency. In August a nuclear missile unit at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., failed a nuclear safety and security inspection; nine days later an officer in charge of the unit's security forces was relieved of duty.

Levitation Photography

Believe it or not, you don't have to own super expensive equipment or be some kind of camera wiz to take high quality camera shots like these...
... but all those hotdog pro photographers out there will NEVER reveal their secrets to you...
... so I'm about to do it for you.
Don't take my word for that though - here's what just one person had to say:
If you've ever wanted to:
  • Take breathtaking special effects shots with just your regular camera...
  • Finally know how to create "light painting" images that are simply
    out of this world
  • Improve your "regular" photography skills and take better photos immediately...
Then you need to keep reading because everything's going to be revealed on this page...
... and here's the best part:
Because of the practical shortcut secrets you're about to find out, you'll quickly be able to skip the "amateur photographer" stage that usually takes years to get past... and you'll be a much better photographer from the very next time you take a shot.

From: Evan Sharboneau
Dear Photographer,
Here's the deal -
If you want to be able to take the really cool photos - those crazy special effects images others just can't figure out - what I'm about to share with you will blow your mind...
... in fact, you'll probably be a little annoyed that nobody told you this stuff before.
You see, there are a handful of simple, easy techniques that can totally transform how you use and view your camera - and they're so quick to grasp, they'll make a difference for you the very next time you snap a picture.
Trouble is, the ranks of highly paid professionals out there don't like to share.
So up until now, the only alternative has been to take expensive college or evening courses, and buy a ton of pricey equipment.
And I don't know about you, but I don't have thousands of dollars to throw at new cameras, lights, and to enroll in courses.
So I learned the hard way.
multiplicity clones photography
You see, I'm an obsessive photographer.
I'm one of those guys who constantly takes pictures. I drive people crazy, always snapping something. You know?
And I like to experiment - always have.
Trouble was, I wanted to take all these cool shots, and I had all these great ideas... but I didn't know how to get started... and I didn't think I had all the specialist equipment I'd need...
... so I had to experiment.
I Had No Choice - I Didn't Have
Money To Burn, So I HAD To Figure
Out This Stuff On A Shoestring
And I did it, through necessity. I'm passionate about this stuff, and I couldn't rest until I could get the kinds of pictures I wanted to get.
Ever hang around at Flickr.com or DeviantaART.com?
I wanted to be able to do some of the photography tricks I saw people doing there. All those cool visual effects, that out of this world stuff - I needed to know how it was done.
And I guess you could say I got a little obsessive - but that's okay. Photography is my passion, and if you've been bitten by the bug, you'll know what it feels like to have that burning need to get just the right shot.
Eventually, all the crazy experimentation started to pay off. My photography buddies started asking how I was taking my pictures, what techniques, what equipment...
... and I'd be creating crazy images like this just using my plain old digital camera, while everybody was assuming I was using Photoshop.
Computer Monitor Optical Illusions Photography
And eventually, I was getting so many people asking me how I did all this stuff, that I put together a simple guide revealing everything.
Thousands of people all over the world have downloaded the guide, and used it to finally get the shots they want...
... and I've just updated it, and released the second edition.

Brazil beauty industry sets sights on men

September 26, 2013
In the wealthy Jardins neighbourhood of Sao Paulo, one street boasts five beauty salons, but the Mr Jardins shop stands out from the pack — catering to a male clientele.
Men stop in for traditional haircuts and shaves, but also come for other treatments — waxing, waist-slimming massages, youth-boosting facials, skin cleanses, and even manicures and pedicures.

Gregorio Mendes, the owner of Mr Jardins, says his salon welcomes new clients "every day" who come in for a haircut, and end up daring to take advantage of the other services on offer.
"It's a growing market. The misconception that a man who waxes is maybe not a real man is beginning to disappear," Mendes said, referring to the concept of machismo still lingering in Latin America.
"Men of all ages come here, either because they want to or because their wives, girlfriends or daughters bring them. It's not a gay or straight thing. The important thing is that they want to look good."
Marcos Costa, a tall, slim 44-year-old entrepreneur at Mr Jardins, explains that he does "everything possible" to make himself more attractive, but still sees a bit of a stigma attached to male primping.
"Women love for us to be well-groomed and smell good, but if they see us at the hair salon getting a manicure, that bugs them," Costa said at the salon, which opened 5 years ago.
Billions in beauty sales
According to the Brazilian Association of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Industry (ABIHPEC), the beauty sector has grown 10% annually over the last decade, as 40 million people joined Brazil's booming middle class.
Last year, the beauty market in Brazil generated $42 billion (RM135 billion) in sales, accounting for 10% of the world market, putting it in third place behind only the United States and Japan.
Earlier this month in Sao Paulo at Beauty Fair, which organizers say is Latin America's largest and the world's third-biggest beauty product and appliance expo, commercial deals totalled more than $200 million (RM645 million).
Dyes and tinted shampoos, matte nail polish, beard grooming products, moisturisers and hair removal creams for those afraid of hot wax are just some of the products being peddled to men, industry professionals say.
Soccer stars in ads
"Men are less and less ashamed to take care of themselves. The sector hasn't seen a boom quite yet, but we're getting there," Marcia Sandim, marketing director for the Ikesaki boutique chain, a major player in the Sao Paulo beauty market, told AFP.
A spokeswoman for French cosmetics giant L'Oreal said: "We all see that this is a growing market that we are following carefully."
Sergio Piao, an official with US consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble, noted that "growth in sales of products for men practically doubled last year."
With less than a year to go before the Brazil World Cup, soccer stars Lionel Messi and Pele are part of the company's advertising campaign for its just-launched anti-dandruff shampoo for men.
At Mr Jardins, Mendes says his biggest problem is finding male aestheticians trained in beauty services for men.

According to the Brazilian Association of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Industry (ABIHPEC), the beauty sector has grown 10 percent annually over the last decade, as 40 million people joined Brazil's booming middle class.
Last year, the beauty market in Brazil generated $42 billion in sales, accounting for 10 percent of the world market, putting it in third place behind only the United States and Japan.
Earlier this month in Sao Paulo at Beauty Fair, which organizers say is Latin America's largest and the world's third-biggest beauty product and appliance expo, commercial deals totaled more than $200 million.
Dyes and tinted shampoos, matte nail polish, beard grooming products, moisturizers and hair removal creams for those afraid of hot wax are just some of the products being peddled to men, industry professionals say.
At Mr Jardins, Mendes says his biggest problem is finding male estheticians trained in beauty services for men.
"We need more professionals," he lamented.

Ex-beauty queen pleads to lesser charge in Utah bombing

Ex-beauty queen pleads to lesser charge in Utah bombing

A former Utah beauty queen arrested on suspicion of throwing homemade bombs in a Salt Lake City suburb admitted to a lesser charge on Thursday, and was ordered to perform volunteer work, officials said.
Kendra McKenzie Gill, 18, entered a plea in abeyance in a district court to misdemeanor attempted possession of a chemical or incendiary device, according to a spokeswoman for the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
Under Utah law, a plea in abeyance allows a person to complete terms imposed by a court and eventually have charges dismissed without a conviction appearing on any criminal record.
"At the end of the day, this is not going to tarnish her sparkle," said Gill's attorney, Wally Bugden.
Gill, is the former Miss Riverton, but she resigned her beauty title for the town of roughly 40,000 residents after she and three other teenagers were arrested over the August 2 incident and charged with possession of an incendiary device.
At the time, police said they had received reports of the sound of explosions in a Riverton neighborhood where investigators later found remnants of bombs constructed from household chemicals, aluminum foil and plastic water bottles.
"This wasn't intended to hurt anyone or be mean — it was intended to be funny," Bugden said.
Under the original charge, the blond former beauty queen had faced up to 15 years in prison, he said.
Now a freshmen at Utah Valley State University, Gill was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service, which includes a video to explain the prank is not funny, Bugden said.
The three other teenagers will eventually see their cases dismissed under the same plea deal given to Gill, said court spokeswoman Nancy Volmer.

Palestinian leader urges world powers to rein in Israeli settlements

Palestinian leader urges world powers to rein in Israeli settlements

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday that "time is running out" for Middle East peace efforts and urged world powers to rein in Israeli settlement construction that he said could undermine U.S.-sponsored negotiations.
In an address to an annual gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, Abbas committed to negotiating with Israel in good faith but he also painted what he called a "dispiriting and bleak" picture for peace prospects.
Abbas's assessment came one day after Secretary of State John Kerry suggested a more hopeful outlook, saying the two sides had agreed to intensify talks and increase the U.S. role.
The resumption of long-dormant peace talks in July was an achievement for Kerry, but many Israelis and Palestinians - as well as independent experts - are skeptical about the chances of reaching a peace deal in their decades-old conflict.
"Time is running out, and the window of peace is narrowing and the opportunities are diminishing," Abbas said. "The current round of negotiations appears to be a last chance to realize a just peace."
Abbas spoke at the United Nations for the first time in the official name of the State of Palestine. Over U.S. and Israeli objections, the General Assembly last November voted to upgrade the Palestinians to "non-member state" from observer entity.
Abbas sought to assure Israelis that the raising of the Palestinians' U.N. status was not meant to "delegitimize" Israel and he called on them to work with him to "sow the seeds of good neighborliness" between their peoples.
'PRETEXTS AND OBSESSIONS'
But he also urged Israelis to abandon "exaggerated security pretexts and obsessions." Israeli security concerns focus mainly on Gaza, where Hamas - a militant group sworn to Israel's destruction - rules instead of Abbas's mainstream Palestinian Authority.
He reserved his toughest criticism for Jewish settlement building on occupied land that the Palestinians want for a state of their own, saying it "aims to change the facts on the ground" and has fractured the concept of the so-called two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The United States is seeking to broker an agreement in which Israel would exist peacefully alongside a new Palestinian state created in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, lands occupied by the Israelis since a 1967 war.
"The international community is asked to remain alert to condemn and stop any actions on the ground that would undermine negotiations - and I refer here, above all, to the continuation of settlement construction on our Palestinian land, particularly in Jerusalem," Abbas said.
There was no immediate reaction from the Israeli government. But Israel's parliamentary opposition leader, Shelly Yechimovich of the center-left Labour party, called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to do more for peace.
She said the "moderate remarks" by Abbas - compared to his more strident U.N. speech a year earlier - "foster cautious hope that we face a new era of dialogue that might lead to an accord," according to a statement from her office.
The modest attention paid on Thursday to the Abbas speech contrasted sharply with how the Palestinian statehood issue dominated the U.N. gathering in 2011 and still ranked high on last year's agenda. This time, the debut of Iran's new president, Hassan Rouhani, and the crisis in Syria overshadowed other issues.
The future of settlements is one of the key issues that must be resolved. The last round of peace talks collapsed in 2010 in a dispute over settlement construction in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their capital.
About 350,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank along with some 2.5 million Palestinians, who say that the settlements deny them a viable and contiguous state. The World Court has deemed the settlements to be illegal. Israel disagrees.
Abbas met U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday on the U.N. sidelines.
Netanyahu will meet with Obama at the White House on Monday and address the General Assembly on Tuesday.

Nobel Winners Keep Eyes on the Real Prize: Solving Dark Energy Riddle

The three scientists who won this year's Nobel Prize in physics are certainly not resting on their laurels. The trio of astrophysicists received their prizes at a ceremony in Stockholm on Saturday (Dec. 10) for the groundbreaking discovery of the accelerated expansion of the universe. But the researchers are already looking forward to the next major breakthroughs in their field.

Saul Perlmutter of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Berkeley, Brian Schmidt of the Australian National University and Adam Riess of Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute spoke before an audience yesterday (Dec. 7) at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm during the so-called Nobel Week to celebrate the year's soon-to-be-crowned laureates.

The surprising discovery that the universe's expansion is picking up speed, rather than slowing down as was expected, was made by two teams — one led by Perlmutter, and the other headed by Schmidt and Riess.

To explain how the universe's expansion is accelerating, researchers came up with an enigmatic force, called dark energy, that is working against the gravitational forces that are pulling the universe inward. Dark energy is thought to make up 73 percent of all mass and energy in the universe, but the force has yet to be directly detected, and the concept remains shrouded in mystery.

As the astrophysicists continue their research, dark energy is one of the things they hope to better understand. [7 Surprising Things About the Universe]

"In the case of our discovery of the acceleration of the universe, it's very much a two-part story, where we're waiting for the second part, the sequel," Riess said. "The prize was not given for understanding dark energy. We really have very little clue about how it operates. I think that many of us in the community at large [are] going to be engaged in this process of trying to understand, what is this stuff? What are the basic properties, the basic physics? What is the mechanism that is causing the universe to accelerate?"

Riess expressed hope that breakthroughs in the study of dark energy will be made over the course of the next decade.

For Schmidt, in addition to trying to grasp what is causing the universe's accelerated expansion, he is eagerly anticipating the next generation of telescopes, such as NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, which are expected to make significant advancements in the field of cosmology. The Webb is scheduled to launch in 2018.

"These are new telescopes which are going to allow us to probe the universe earlier and earlier," Schmidt said. "13.7 billion years ago, the universe was created in the Big Bang. After that, the sea of hydrogen and helium created at the time cooled and formed stars and galaxies for the first time, about 200 million years after that initial event. With the new technology online, we're going to be able to look back and see the universe being born."

Perlmutter, Schmidt and Riess stumbled upon their Nobel Prize-winning discovery by studying distant stellar explosions, called type 1a supernovas. As they measured the cosmic distances to these exploding stars, the researchers found that the universe was acting contrary to what was expected, and their observations ultimately showed that the expansion of the universe was inexplicably speeding up.

While each described the euphoria and disbelief that accompanied the telephone call from the prize committee, Perlmutter, Schmidt and Riess said that their only wish from winning the Nobel is that it will allow them to continue doing the work they are most passionate about.

"I hope that we get to keep doing what we're doing," Riess said. "I love doing research. I think getting to do science every day is just the greatest gift."

USDA to test new trap to catch Everglades pythons

USDA to test new trap to catch Everglades pythons

MIAMI (AP) — Federal wildlife officials alarmed by an infestation of Burmese pythons in the Florida Everglades have tried radio tracking devices, a massive public hunt and even snake-sniffing dogs to control the invasive species. Now there's talk of snaring the elusive pythons in specially designed traps.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture received a patent in August for a trap that resembles a long, thin cage with a net at one end for the live capture of large, heavy snakes.
Researchers say Burmese pythons regard the Everglades as an all-you-can-eat buffet, where native mammals are easy prey and the snakes have no natural predators. The population of Burmese pythons, which are native to India and other parts of Asia, likely developed from pets released into the wild, either intentionally or in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Wildlife officials are racing to control the python population before it undermines ongoing efforts to restore natural water flow through the Everglades. According to a study released last year, mammal sightings in the Everglades are down sharply in areas where pythons are known to live.
The Gainesville field station for the National Wildlife Research Center, which falls under the USDA, is preparing to test the trap in a natural enclosure that contains five pythons.
Over the coming months, the researchers will try baiting the traps with the scent of small mammals such as rats, and they will try camouflaging them as pipes or other small, covered spaces where pythons like to hide, said John Humphrey, a biologist at the research center. Future tests may use python pheromones as bait.
"There's still more to be learned, there's still more to be tested," Humphrey said. "This is just one of your tools that you have to put together with other things to get the problem solved."
The trap was developed to catch exotic snakes without ensnaring smaller, lighter native species, Humphrey said.
The 5-foot-long trap is made from galvanized steel wire with a tightly woven net secured to one end. Two separate triggers need to be tripped simultaneously for it to close, which should keep it from snapping shut on such native snakes as the eastern diamondback rattlesnake or the water moccasin.
"The largest native snakes are generally somewhat smaller than the youngest of the pythons," Humphrey said. "That was the impetus of the design."
The longest python ever caught in Florida was an 18-foot-8-inch specimen found in May beside a rural Miami-Dade County road.
Humphrey developed the trap in collaboration with Wisconsin-based Tomahawk Live Trap, which is working on a licensing agreement to sell the traps along with other snake-handling equipment such as tongs, hooks and secure bags.
"We don't expect to sell a lot of them; it's not an everybody thing, not like a chipmunk or a squirrel trap," said co-owner Jenny Smith. But she said it has potential for wildlife removal companies when they get calls about "a big snake."
It's not clear where exactly the traps would be deployed, or whether they would be effective in an area as vast as Florida's Everglades.
Everglades National Park alone encompasses 1.5 million acres, and all but roughly a hundred thousand acres of that is largely inaccessible swampland and sawgrass, vital breeding grounds for a variety of protected species.
It might not make sense, or even be possible, to place and monitor traps in hard-to-reach swamplands, said park spokeswoman Linda Friar.
Traps have been used in the park to collect pythons for research but not for population control, Friar said.
Most of the state and federal efforts aimed at pythons have focused on learning how the elusive snakes have adapted so well in the wild, and that learning process continues, she said.
"They're so difficult to track and find," Friar said. "What we do know is they've adapted. We don't know how many there are."
One of the challenges facing wildlife officials is that the tan, splotchy snakes are incredibly difficult to spot in the wild, even for seasoned hunters. Researchers say they'll fail to see a python they're tracking with a radio tracking device until they're practically standing on it.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission allows hunters with special permits to remove pythons and other exotic reptiles from some state lands. Earlier this year, a state-sanctioned hunt that attracted worldwide media attention. Roughly 1,600 amateur python hunters joined the permit holders for a month, netting a total of 68 snakes.
In an Auburn University experiment, specially trained dogs found more pythons than their human counterparts, but researchers also found that the dogs, much like humans, would falter the longer they worked in South Florida's often oppressive humidity.
State wildlife officials also try to catch pythons through "exotic pet amnesty days" where people can relinquish non-native species with no questions asked. They also urge residents to report encounters with pythons and other invasive species to a hotline, www.IVEGOT1.org. Florida prohibits the possession or sale of pythons for use as pets, and federal law bans the importation and interstate sale of the species.
A prolonged cold snap has proven to be one of the better methods of python population control, killing off large numbers of the snakes in 2010. The population rebounded, though, because low temperatures aren't reliable in subtropical South Florida and because pythons reproduce quickly and in large numbers.
Other traps set for pythons in the past haven't been effective, but traps have been successfully used to capture other exotic species such as black-and-white tegu lizards, said conservation commission spokeswoman Carli Segelson.
"It may be something that if it doesn't work for the python, it may work for other species," she said.

Why does everyone hate the Tea Party?

You might think that with Ted Cruz still hoarse from faux filibustering the Senate, and House conservatives on the brink of shutting down the government, Tea Partiers would have reason to celebrate. But a Gallup poll released this morning might put any partying on hold: Popular support for the conservative movement has dwindled to a near-record low.

The percentage of Americans who support the Tea Party shrank from 32 percent in November 2010, when Republicans retook the House of Representatives, to just 22 percent today. That’s not quite as low as the 21 percent support it commanded in late 2011, but it's still a distinct downward slide that looks set to continue. Opponents of the movement now outnumber supporters by five percentage points. The pollster Lydia Saad lays out the bottom line:

U.S. support for the Tea Party is at a low ebb at a time when key issues of concern for the movement — funding for the Affordable Care Act and raising the U.S. debt ceiling — are focal points in Washington, with Tea Party-backed Sen. Ted Cruz prominently fighting both policies. [Gallup]
It’s tempting to blame the junior senator from Texas for America’s cooling on the Tea Party.

Cruz’s theatrics in the Senate have reinforced his status as the patron saint of the movement, and to many, he has become its public face. But many Republicans believe Cruz’s strategy is harming the party, and that distaste may be translating into waning support among moderate conservatives for Tea Party goals. Cruz and fellow rabble-rouser Sen. Mike Lee (R– Utah) “have absolutely no idea what they are doing,” complains Jennifer Rubin at The Washington Post, a onetime cheerleader for the movement:
Lee and Cruz’s insistence that they are the ones "fighting" is belied by the facts. They are actually intent on running into a concrete wall again and again to prove their political machismo. For many Republicans this isn’t bravery but stupidity. [The Washington Post]
But perhaps, as Jeb Golinkin suggested at TheWeek.com earlier this year, the Tea Party is losing support because its followers believe it has sold out to the mainstream Republican Party. Supporters may have realized that what was once a grassroots movement of true believers has been "appropriated by a new class of political insiders," made up of freshmen congressmen awed by Washington, and money-scraping strategists for political action committees:
"All of them owe their power to the existence of this thing called the Tea Party. But now they have to maintain the illusion that the Tea Party is totally distinct from the GOP, and stands for meaningfully different values. Otherwise, those [congressmen] may no longer seem quite so special, and those PACs may be viewed as the latest in a long line of conservative money-gathering operations." [The Week]
Then again, while support is dwindling, opposition to the Tea Party is not growing. In fact, 51 percent of Americans said they had no strong feelings about the movement at all — neither supporting nor opposing it, or having no opinion. And the percentage of people who consider themselves Tea Party supporters is still higher than those who admit to being liberal, notes William A. Jacobson at Legal Insurrection:

"Think about it another way, if you were at a dinner table with four other people who represented the American electorate, one of the people at the table would be a Tea Party supporter. And two others would have no opinion." [Legal Insurrection]
And if Tea Partiers still believe their movement is leaking popular support, they might be comforted by the fact that there is still one group in politics even less popular than they are: The U.S. Congress.
